Hot plate pad project

 

Last year I created this hot plate pad for a Forth of July BBQ and by the time I got it finished it was to late to share with all of you.  Here is how I created it.  I used  scraps of fabric from other projects and used bottle caps.  The first step is to wash and dry all the bottle caps, cut out a circle large enough to cover the bottle cap your using.  The bottle caps I used measured about 1 1/4 inches across, the temple circle I created was 2 inches across.  After I cut out all the fabric circle needed to cover the bottle caps for the hot plat pad use a running stitch about 1/8th to 1/4 inch from the out side edge of the circle and sew all the way around to the where you started,, lay the cap in the center  of the circle and pull the thread to gather it up and around the bottle caps.  Next I laid out the flag design, on wax paper and used fabric glue to tack  them together.  After the glue was dry use a heavy button thread to tack them all together to secure  and keep them in place.  The last thing I did was to remove the wax paper and cut cork paper ( the heavy kind used for scrap booking) and glued it to the back of the bottle caps.  * be sure to let it cry before using. 

There are lots of wonderful fabrics available and a person could make a whole set for a gift.  Have fun and enjoy.
